The Great Square

The Great Square is a triangular square and the center of Antwerp. It is the ideal starting point for visiting some of the popular sights in Antwerp. The terraces are crowded on nice days. The square is dominated by the tower of the Cathedral of Our Lady and the Town Hall. That City Hall was built between 1561 and 1564 in Renaissance style.

Cathedral of Our Lady

The beautiful Antwerp cathedral rises above the center of the city through the large tower of 123 meters high. The cathedral has been built, demolished and rebuilt several times so that you can find different architectural styles. The church was founded in the twelfth century around a ninth-century chapel. There is also little left of the original interior due to the sixteenth-century iconoclasm, but there are also a number of famous works by Antwerp artist Peter Paul Rubens in the church.

Antwerp Zoo

The Antwerp Zoo dates from 1843 and is one of the best known, oldest and most beautiful city zoos in Europe. It is located right next to Central Station (if you are on platform 6, you can see the walls and trees of the zoo). There are around 1000 different animal species on display at the zoo, and you can also walk around the zoo at the zoo.

The MAS

The Museum aan de Stroom can be found on Het Eilandje since 2011 and is told about the history of the city. Particular attention is paid to Antwerp as an important port city, and the MAS also houses the old collection of the nearby Maritime Museum and the collection of the former Museum of Ethnology. At the top of the building you can enjoy the view over Antwerp on the (free to enter) panorama roof terrace.
