Must-sees Lisbon
Mosteiro dos Jeronimos
This monastery in the Belém district is a prominent building in the city of Lisbon. In the monastery are the graves of, among others, explorer Vasco de Gama, poets Fernando Pessoa and Luís de Cames and members of the Royal family. The dimensions of this beautiful monastery are very impressive. The inside of the monastery is decorated with Manueline motifs, in which European and Moorish motifs and elements make it very special.
Castelo de São Jorge
This beautiful castle is located on top of the highest hill in the center of Lisbon. From here you have a very nice view over the city. Geese and ducks walk through the gardens of this beautiful castle. Locals also like to be in the shade under a tree.
Torre de Belém
The Tower of Belem is located in the Belém district of Lisbon. This used to be a ceremonial access road to Lisbon. Now today a tourist attraction for its beautiful appearance. This tower from 1515 is a work of art in Manuel style, although some rooms still have characteristics of Islamic and Moorish architecture.
Avenida da Liberdade
Paris has the Champs-Élysées, but Lisbon should certainly not be inferior with the Avenida da Liberdade. This shopping street of 1.1 kilometers has many more famous (and especially: more expensive) brands. Think of Prada, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton. The street runs from Rossio square to a gigantic city park: The Eduardo VII Park.
